AASECT Certification Requirements Pages Updated Format Details

AASECT’s Requirements for Certification pages received updates for clarity. Primary changes consist of:

  • Changing roman numerals to arabic numerals.
  • Notes about each item are now in a “What to Know” section.
  • Section headers have either been consolidated or parsed out.
    • For example, “III. Academic and Professional Experience” for the CST requirements is now “3. Academic Experience” and “4. Professional Sex Therapy Clinical Experience.”
    • Another example is the content in the “VIII. Clinical Experience, Field Work, Internship or Professional Training Experience” for the CST has been reallocated to more appropriate headers like “9. Supervision” in the “What to Know” and “What to Submit” sections.
  • Some aspects of the certification process that were not written on these pages are now clearly identified, such as:
    • Professional reference and supervisory letters should be written to discuss the applicant’s professional responsibility, ethics, and skill.
    • That applicants are held to the certification requirements that are in effect when they enter into a supervision contract. (Version numbers for the certification requirements pages have been included on the top of the pages to better track any future requirement changes.)
  • Older notes about certification have been incorporated clearly into the text, rather than outstanding as an historical note. This is done to avoid confusion.
  • The “general eligibility” item for CSC requirements is not a requirement item, but is moved to a note under item “4. Professional Counseling Experience.”
  • For CSEs, section headers about professional experience and practicum have been simplified. Requirements have not changed. You’ll notice what were once different sections (Professional experience and field work/practicum) are now under a single “professional experience” header in item number 4.
  • Headers and other repeated text has been made uniform.

These are some examples of how the website updates can contribute to better communication about our certification requirements and what applicants need to submit when submitting for certification.
